Giving and Showing Gratitude
Have you heard the term, "the more you give the more you will receive". It is so true. You just need to look at Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, Bono (U2), Oprah Winfrey, Peter Lim ( Remiseir who donated S$10 million to Singapore Sports Education fund), and there are many more unknown individuals who have done it that you may not have heard. This wonderful people keep getting more wealth when they actually don't need it. So they give it away and they keep getting more.
But you must give to the right cause. You should not give money to people who do not deserve it because they will use your gift in wrong ways that will only cause more harm to themselves and more heartache for you. It is better to teach these type of people "how to fish" rather than helping them by giving them money.
The other thing is saying "Thank You" and being "Grateful" is so important. It is nice to hear someone says thank you for things that they receive. It makes the person giving it want to give more. For example, when you give way to car and the driver in the other car say thank you, you feel good and want to give way to more cars.
My wife and I are particular about our children saying "please" and "thank you". We don't want our children to take it forgranted that they will get everything they ask without appreciating the person giving it. It is sad that some kids are trained by or allowed to boss their maids to do everything for them. The maids are there to make your lives easier. Not to be your slave. Be grateful that this person has sacrificed their family to come and work here. Granted, some maids are not easy to put up with. We have to learn to manage them. If not you have to change another maid.
It is these things that makes the world such a wonderful place to live. When people share instead of hoarding. People love and care for each other instead of killing. If everybody can ask themselves "How can help you today" or "How can be of service to you today", rather than "what can I get out of the person in front of me", this world will become a even better place to live in.
Thus, giving and being grateful for what you receive will bring more goods things in our lives.
Just a thought that I thought I should share with you.
Love All, Serve All.
Cheers,
Mark

Work is a Means to an End!
I am sure many of us have heard this before......."Work is a Means to an End"! But how many of us know why we working or what we working for. Some people are slaves to their job putting in 12 hours a day and even 7 days a week.
Is that why we are brought into this world.....to work? That's sad. Even if you love your job, there must be some kind of balance to your life.
I have two friends in Malaysia who are lawyers. I have known them for more than 10 years. They used work day and night with very little time to party or meet up with friends. They used to complain about working long hours and yet they continued doing so. Fortunately, whenever I went up to Malaysia, we managed to meet up and go for dinners and drinks. I used to advise them to make more time for themselves so that they can have a life. I even dispensed this advise over emails whenever I had time and I complain that they only have time to come to Johore for their cases and no time to cross over to Singapore because they are so busy even though I had made at least 10 trips to meet them. The good news is that both these friends have settled down. One friend has a 3 year old son and ironically she is in Singapore and she now has a shorter working hour as a in-house lawyer. The other friend had her wedding in Bali (the most exotic wedding I have ever attended) and she is expecting her first child. She is now lecturing. I am so happy for them. These are things that bring meaning to your life-friends, happy marriage, children, your pets, etc. Not work as they have found out and I did long time ago.
I am not saying you should not work. You should work. Just don't let it control your life. Take a break from work if you had worked continuously for at least a year. You need to recharge. You will be surprised what it do to your outlook of life and your productivity at work. And you should take time to exercise because Health is Wealth. I had a friend in the F & B line who died of heart attack recently. He worked hard and he played hard. He was only 43 years old. When I hear about these things I wonder if it is worth sacrificing your life for work. Stress is a major cause of illness and pain in our body. So, please take good care. Minimize the stress in your life.
Here are some things to consider:-
1) If you hate your job- Sack the company. Look for a better one.
2) If you hate your BOSS!-Sack the BOSS. Find a new BOSS in another company who is not BOSSY.
3) No Time- Make time or Find a New JOB!
4) Take a Break from your JOB!- take a week or two off every year or every 6 months to recharge. Travel. DO CHARITY WORK!
5) Take up a Part-Time Course then change industry so that you have a better pay and more time to spend the hard earned money well.
6) Become your own BOSS- start while you on your current job (if you can) and build it. Once it has grown big enough you can quit your job. May not be easy as you think but you have to start somewhere. Just don't wait too long.
7) Have Business on the side that provides you passive income so that you do not have to work so hard in your current job. Rental from investment property and network marketing are two options you can consider according to Robert Kiyosaki.
I hope I have given you some idea about what work means to me. Don't quit just because of what I said. You have to make an informed decision on why you are doing what you are doing. Plan your life (read my April 2008 article-"You Are the CEO of Your Company: "ME Inc."). You work to feed yourself, have roof over your head, buy clothes, go for a movies, save for RETIREMENT, share some of your wealth with the less fortunate and basically have a Good Life. Enjoy the life you have properly. Don't be a slave to your work.
Have a Great Life! Don't Worry Be Happy!

Give Way To Ambulance!
About two weeks ago, I had to bring my dad who is 79 years old and not able walk on his own, by Ambulance to National University Hospital (NUH). He had a wound on his left heel which did not heal quickly (it has been more than three weeks) and I was advised by my friend who is a Doctor to bring him in to NUH.
So I got a private ambulance from Serangoon North. From the time we reached the expressways, there was jam everywhere, from the Central Expressway (CTE) to Ayer Rajah Express (AYE). The Ambulance driver and assistant were great. They took care of my dad very well. But what irked me were the car drivers who refused to give way. It was not an emergency case but the driver had turned on the lights (but not the siren) to alert drivers to give way. But to my utter disgust, the drivers remained on lane one without giving way. Some for as long as 5km. This happened both on the way to and back from the hospital.
According to the Ambulance Driver this was common even for emergency cases where drivers block the way and the Ambulance Drivers even get reprimanded on STOMP for going at 80km/hr. How are Ambulance drivers supposed to save lives if they get blocked by errant drivers and at the same time observe speed limits.
If you have friends and family members who drive, please advise them to give way to ambulances. It could be your loved ones or friends who may need to rush to the hospital and you may not like to face a similar situation especially if it is an emergency.
Drivers, please be considerate. Please pass on the message so that we can save more lives.
Have a Great Day!

Mark

Power of Touch, a Smile, Listening Ear and a Kind Word
I received this via an email. I wish I knew who the author was....this is so beautiful I have to share with you though I did not write a word of it....
Twinkies and Root Beer
A little boy wanted to meet God. He knew it was a long trip to where God lived, so he packed his suitcase with Twinkies and a six-pack of Root Beer and he started his journey.
When he had gone about three blocks, he met an elderly man. The man was sitting in the park just feeding some pigeons.
The boy sat down next to him and opened his suitcase. He was about to take a drink from his root beer when he noticed that the man looked hungry, so he offered him a Twinkie.
The man gratefully accepted it and smiled at boy. His smile was so pleasant that the boy wanted to see it again, so he offered him a root beer.
Again, the man smiled at him. The boy was delighted! They sat there all afternoon eating and smiling, but they never said a word.
As it grew dark, the boy realized how tired he was and he got up to leave, but before he had gone more than a few steps, he turned around, ran back to the man, and gave him a hug. The man gave him his biggest smile ever.
When the boy opened the door to his own house a short time later, his mother was surprised by the look of joy on his face. She asked him, "What did you do today that made you so happy?
"He replied, "I had lunch with God." But before his mother could respond, he added, "You know what? God's got the most beautiful smile I've ever seen!"
Meanwhile, the elderly man, also radiant with joy, returned to his home. His son was stunned by the look of peace on his face and he asked," Dad, what did you do today that made you so happy?"
He replied, "I ate Twinkies in the park with God." However, before his son responded, he added," You know, he's much younger than I expected."
Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around. People come into our lives for a reason, a season, or a lifetime. Embrace all equally!

Send this to people who have touched your life in a special way. Let them know how important they are. Have lunch with God!
And .......Thanks for touching my life!

Want to Lose Weight?
This is funny and have a good laugh….
"A guy calls a company and orders their 5-day, 10 lb. weight loss program. The next day, there's a knock on the door and there stands before him a voluptuous, athletic, 19 year old babe dressed in nothing but a pair of Nike running shoes and a sign around her neck.
She introduces herself as a representative of the weight loss company. The sign reads, "If you can catch me, you can have me."
Without a second thought, he takes off after her. A few miles later puffing and puffing, he finally gives up. The same girl shows up for the next four days and the same thing happens. On the fifth day, he weighs himself and is delighted to find he has lost 10 lbs. as promised.
He calls the company and orders their 5 -day/20 pound program. The next day there's a knock at the door and there stands the most stunning, beautiful, sexy woman he has ever seen in his life. She is wearing nothing but Reebok running shoes and a sign around her neck that reads, "If you catch me you can have me".
Well, he's out the door after her like a shot. This girl is in excellent shape and he does his best, but no such luck. So for the next four days, the same routine happens with him gradually getting in better and better shape. Much to his delight on the fifth day when he weighs himself, he discovers that he has lost another 20 lbs. as promised. He decides to go for broke and calls the company to order the 7-day/50 pound program.
"Are you sure?" asks the representative on the phone. "This is our most rigorous program." "Absolutely," he replies, "I haven't felt this good in years."
The next day there's a knock at the door; and when he opens it he finds a huge muscular guy standing there wearing nothing but pink running shoes and a sign around his neck that reads, "If I catch you, your ass is mine."
He lost 63 pounds that week."
Someone sent this to me. The point I am trying to make is....there a many ways to lose weight. You can run after the imaginary naked women or just watch what you eat and exercise regularly. There is no real need to diet becuase diets usually fail. We all like to eat and if the good food is "bad" like burger & fries, char kwai teow, nasi briyani, etc have them once in a while like once in two or three weeks. If you like to eat then exercise more.
Ask a friend to help you lose weight. You can keep each other company as you try to achieve your goal of losing weight and keeping fit. Don't wait till you join "Asia's Biggest Loser". By then only person who can help you will be the guy who wants torture you till you drop. So don't wait. If start now, you can chip away at the fats little by little. You must be committed and deciplined to achive your goals.
Good Luck!

Are We Spoiling Our Children?
This article is dedicated to good responsible parents who bring up their children with good values and who make a positive contribution to society. It is also dedicated to great teachers who love to teach and groom children to their full potential as students. What prompted me to write this was when my friends who are teachers highlighted the challenges they face on a daily basis from over-zealous parents about their children.
Parents in today's context are not able to spend quality time like parents in the "Baby-Boomers" generation. We are the "Sandwich Generation". Parents find it hard to spend quality time with their children as in most cases both parents are working and some also have to look after both their parents and children. It is not easy especially since cost of living is very high and a single income is not sufficient. So how do parents makeup for this lack of quality time. They over indulge their children.
We were at my son's classmates Birthday Party in McDonald's. One mother complained to my wife that the primary school does not have air-con and her poor son has to study in a hot weather. When we attended primary school there was no fan let alone air-conditioner. Then there are Parents who buy presents for children just for completing homework which they are supposed to do in the first place as a student. Children, should not be rewarded for completing their homework. Are parents spoiling their kids? If you ask me, I would say most definitely, YES!
Parents want their children to love them and one way to earn their love is to bribe them with money and toys or whatever they ask for. Never mind that the kids don't learn to appreciate their parents or the value of money and gifts. You wonder why so many parents end up in old folks home or their children steal their hard earned wealth or abandon them once they get a job or get married.
There are Parents who are expecting the teachers to take care of their children now a days. To me that is a tall order. That means the teachers are grossly underpaid because they are doing 2 jobs multiplied by 30 children in each class (est.). They should be getting at least 3x the salary because a Parent's job is not easy. If it was easy, why do parents find it difficult to talk to their children. Why are many couples opting to have dogs and cats as their children. Parent's job as difficult as it may be, is to bring up their children well and the teachers job is to feed the minds of children so that they become knowledgeable. It is not easy for teachers to look after 30 children.
In fact, parents should ask their children's teachers how they can help the teachers do their jobs better. Remember, children are smart and they can act as well. If parents believe everything the kids say then they will be taken for a ride by their kids. But find out the truth before acting or reacting. I am of the believe - "spare the rod and spoil the child". If parents can't do their job properly, then how can you expect teachers to do the parent's job for them?
Here are some advice on how to bring up your children:
1) Teach the kids the "Value of Education". Don't just tell them to study. Explain to them why good education is important and how it can assist them in the future.
2) If you want to reward kids, then do it for the right reasons. Explain to them why they are being rewarded. E.g. if the kid does more than just his homework that makes him even better than his classmates. Then reward him/her appropriately. Don't buy him/her a Ferrari/Louis Vuitton bag/Play Station for their birthday. That only spoils him/her.
3) Have good balance between studies and sports. The kids will be all rounded and well grounded because you need discipline and training to succeed in sports.
4) Talk to the teachers to find out how you can help them do their job better. This will also help the teachers manage the child better.
5) Spend time with the children. Sometimes all the children need is attention. Talk to them about their time in school, whether they need help with their studies, about their friends, etc. Get involved so that children will appreciate you. But watch yourself so that you do not get pushy or intrude too much in their lives.
6) If you have a serious problem with your child, please talk to a qualified counselor. Please do not use threats such "I will die if you do not do not listen to me" or "I will kill you if you go out without my permission" which only scares the children and confuses them even more. Eventually, the threats lose their purpose and become empty threats.
7) Talk to friends who are teachers to get their point of view. You will get a honest opinion about their personal experience. You will be surprised what teachers have to put up with .e.g. when a girl was brought to the Principal’s office, the girl asked the teacher who asked you to look at my "polka dot" bra. Another father, came crying to the teacher saying that the daughter had not returned home and instead she was staying with the boyfriend.
8) And of course there is the Internet. You can go to websites like http://www.oprah.com/ for advise. Here is one article- http://www.oprah.com/spirit/How-to-Love-Your-Children-with-All-Your-Might-and-Still-Raise-a-Good-Kid .
9) Teach them some soft skills -Public Talking, Presentation Skills, Investing Skills, etc that outside of their education. These skills will complement their education. Bring them on educational trips like helping cyclone Nargis hit Burma to rebuild their homes.
10) Most importantly, teach children about "Responsibility", "Discipline" and show "Respect".
To Be Responsible- for their actions.
To Be Disciplined – controlled and obedient behavior without sacrificing honesty and creative expression.
To Be Respectful - towards their elders including their parents and teachers and their friends. Saying "thank-you", "please" and "sorry" should come naturally.
Parenting is a challenge but parents who are able to face up to this challenge will have an easier time later on when their children are older. If you want your child to grow up to be good adults and citizens, then you should start when they are young. Children need to understand the value of family, education, money, life, friends, etc and only parents can teach that to their child these invaluable lessons.
My motto is help yourself and help others. Parent's who help themselves by bringing their children up well, will have children who will love them and hence, children who will help others. This will help teachers as they will be able to do their jobs more effectively.
Good Luck!

Mark
